Carpet Stain Removal Made Easy

sofa

A spilled cup of coffee may ruin your morning, but it doesn’t have to ruin your carpet. In fact, most unsightly carpet stains can be removed with quick and appropriate action.

So how do you go about removing stains from your carpet? Here’s what you need to know.

Cleaning Supplies

Dish soaps that contain a degreaser work well for lifting stains. You’ll also find an assortment of commercial cleaners at most any hardware store. If you’d rather avoid the chemical ingredients present in commercial cleaners, it’s easy to mix a solution of your own.

All you need is a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and water and a dash of dish soap. This mixture works well with most stains, including coffee, wine and pet urine. You’ll also need baking soda and a few dry towels.

Treatment

  1. Gently clean away any debris, careful not to press it into the carpet fibers.
  2. Absorb as much of the stain as possible using a cloth dampened with cold water. Dab from the outside in to avoid spreading the stain.
  3. Pretreat the stain with the cleaning solution. If you’re using the homemade remedy, sprinkle baking soda on the affected area before adding the solution. Wait for the baking soda to react.
  4. Blot away the stain, again from the outside in.
  5. Rinse with cool water and dab to dry.
  6. Repeat as needed until the stain is lifted.

Pet Stains

Pet urine stains present an additional challenge: lingering odor. If you have pets, your best bet is to keep an enzyme cleaner handy — this type of cleaner breaks down the stain and odor of pet accidents.

If you run into a particularly stubborn stain, call a professional carpet cleaner. They’ll know what to do.
